Abafana abafani - Young men are not the same
I am queer. I am Xhosa. I am an artist. I am a son. I am a brother. I am a change agent. I am all of these things at once and they cannot be looked at in isolation.
A short overview of the talk
My talk will focus on the birth and provenance of my intervention, Abafana abafani which was a defiant public celebration of the diversity of masculinity in Xhosa culture. I birthed this performance in Port Elizabeth, where the most violent protests took place in response to the movie Inxeba (The Wound), which is the Eastern Cape province’s most globally celebrated cultural export. The movie has not been circulated or shown in the Eastern Cape due to rampant homophobia in the province.
